Running for State Senate in Legislative District 22, Brianna Westbrook is a local that has seen the hardships in Arizona allowing her to understand the difficulties many Arizonans go through. She spent her childhood in poverty where there were days she rummaged through trash cans for food and slept in her mom’s car. She held many jobs, including physically demanding jobs such as pouring asphalt, railroad jobs, etc. – anything to put food on the table for her and her siblings. Born in Arizona, she moved away before the age of 10, going around the country, and came back once again when family duty called to take care of her siblings so the family would not lose them to CPS.
How does a local hard-working Arizona become a politician? Understanding the hardships of those around her and always feeling empathy for those that were discriminated against, she started out as an activist in 2013. She fought for LGBT rights and argued at Phoenix City Council to support anti discriminatory actions against those with disabilities. She worked with schools to protect public education and remove dark money from elections.
But what really pushed her over the edge to run for a political position was the Muslim Ban. Currently a Sales Manager at a local car dealership, she was touched by the fear in the eyes of a coworker originally from Palestine. He came to this country to work and provide for his family and she could see the fear in his eyes with the risks the ban imposed. She told him not to worry and that she will fight for him. She worked with her daughter to make signs and handed them out at protests. After doing some soul searching, she realized that she wanted to do something to make a difference. Racism, bigotry, and hate are not acceptable American values and it is time common people stepped up to truly represent what this country stands for.
If elected, her top priority is education. According to Brianna, we need quality education state wide and funding must be increased to allow for better teacher pay and decrease class sizes. Students must be able to afford college instead of loans driving people down. This is the only way our upcoming generations can be prepared for the jos of tomorrow. It is education that will create the talent that will drive the jobs in our community. Equally important to her is healthcare. The USA pays the most in the entire world for healthcare and gets the least amount of return for it. It is time to expand state access programs and protect children’s care. We must also invest in our senior care facilities and programs because we have a large senior population in Sun City West that needs to be taken care of.
Brianna strongly believes that the constituents in the state are changing because there are many issues that cross party lines. The general population is looking for outside the box thinkers that can change things. There is a large voting block of independents that are more policy driven and not party driven. As long as we can attract them, there is a chance at winning and changing the make-up of the representatives in Arizona to bring real change to this State. This could mean many wonderful things for the State of Arizona like an improved tax code that stops giving corporate welfare and leaving ridiculous loopholes for the wealthy that cause Arizona to lose vital revenue – revenue that can be used to fund infrastructure, public education, etc. creating a tax code that works for all Arizonans and not just corporations.
Brianna’s final message to our readers is that she is all about equality and anti-discrimination protection for all people regardless of their origin or personal beliefs and wants to help lift all communities up.
If elected, she will be one more vote to ensure equal rights for everyone.
