Once again, the Phoenix Scorpions Field Hockey Club had the pleasure of hosting their annual Cactus Classic Field Hockey Tournament January 20-21. This was the 11th tournament hosted by the Scorpions which was held at the Reach-11 Sports Complex in Phoenix.
This year 34 teams from across the US participated in the tournament including two teams from Mexico in addition to players from Canada. Although the weather on the first day of the tournament greeted players with unusually cold and rainy day, that did not dampen the spirits of the teams and the level of action and excitement was just as intense on the field. This year we had five teams participate in the Men’s, Women’s and U-17 divisions. And we saw 17 teams vie for the top spot in the mixed division.
The banquet on Saturday night allowed the players to set aside the days competition in exchange for a great time, great food and trying their hand in dancing to Panjabi music! The second day of the tournament greeted the players with the “promised” sunshine and the players were back at it on the field.
Although, in my opinion all team are winners, at the end of the day only one team within their respective divisions was able to lift the Campions Cup. In the U-17 division, the LA Kings had that honor, in the mixed division, it was Yuba Brothers and in the men’s division it was LA Kings that snatched the top spot. And finally, in the women’s division it was Oh, Yeah that got first spot.
The Phoenix Scorpions are grateful to all the volunteers and hockey families that came out (despite the weather on the first day) to make this tournament a great success. With the 2018 tournament behind us, we are looking forward to hosting the 2019 tournament and hope to see you all there.
