Honorable Jerry Williams, the Police Chief of Phoenix City Police visited Nishkam Seva Gurdwara Sahib on Sunday, Jan 21st 2018 to pay respect, to understand Sikh faith and to interact with valley Sikhs to share their issues and concerns. During her stay at Gurdwara Sahib for couple of hours, she was introduced by the author who then requested her to address the Sangat. She was straight forward in informing the community that she fully understands the concerns about the harm done to its members in the past after 9/11 due to their unique Sikh Identity and appearance.
She assured the community that her department will always be there as and when a need arises. She was all praise for the Sikh community and pointed out several community members whom she had interacted at a personal level in the past. She was then honored by Mrs. Saranjit Kaur Saini and presented with couple of books about basics of Sikh faith for which she felt greatly obligated.
She then joined the Sangat in the Langar hall to partake Langar or free community meals of hot freshly prepared vegetarian meals where she had the opportunity to further interact with the community.
It is interesting to note that she is one of very few women Police Chiefs in the country. She took over the reins of one of the largest Police department of Phoenix Police in Arizona State on Oct 16, 2016 after having a very successful career as Police Chief in city of Oxnard, California. Earlier she worked here in the Police department for 22 years where she successfully and brilliantly performed roles in various positions she was assigned to.
At a personal level, she is married to Honorable Cody Williams, Justice of Peace and former city Councilman. More interestingly her son Alan Williams happens to play center for Phoenix Suns.
Mrs. William is instrumental in establishing and running 12 Police Advisory Boards including Sikh Advisory board that helps guide city Police in issues pertaining to those communities. In addition, she oversees Phoenix Police Foundation established to deal with various personal needs of Policemen.
